I haven't read much about cats, but did enjoy Darnton's The Great Cat Massacre, which jumps a little into cats as a social phenomenon and how people revered, feared, etc.
This is fascinating stuff! That Battle of Pelusium story with Cambyses using cats as shields is absolutely wild, I had no idea thats how strategic ancient warfare could get. Its interesting how evolution basicaly trained cats to tolerate humans rather than the other way around - makes you wonder who really domesticated who.

Great, informative essay! My wife and I recently decided to be buried with our cats.
